Samaritans is giving away free massages to the people of Guildford as part of the charity’s annual fundraising initiative Stress Down Day on Friday February 6th 2009.

Stress Down Day aims to create awareness of work-related stress, an issue brought into focus by the current financial crisis, as people feel increased pressure to perform at work and fear redundancy.

Busy workers (and shoppers!) can get involved with Stress Down Day by visiting the Chill-Out Zone at Westfield, The Friary Shopping Centre in Guildford for free massages from The On-Site Massage Company, complimentary Zest Smoothies and a chance to win one of 1000 prizes by taking part in a feel-good lucky dip. There will also be a human stress ball roaming the centre providing people with information about Samaritans. The event will be launched by the Mayor of Guildford, Councillor Jennifer Jordan, at 10.30am and free massages will be available until 3pm.

The emotional support charity is encouraging employers to let their staff take a little time out from their daily work and enjoy a stress-free activity or wear their slippers in the office, in return for a donation to Samaritans to help it continue its 24-hour emotional support service for people in distress.

Celebrity  supporter, Alfonso Sharland from The Hoosiers, said: “We are encouraging people to get involved in Stress Down Day because it is a great way for people to take a break from the stress of the workplace for a couple of hours. Forget about polishing your shoes before work -  just keep your slippers on and feel good about it! Get involved and help raise vital funds to enable Samaritans to support people experiencing problems, particularly if they’re feeling low and down as a result of money worries or job loss fears.”
